Osteo-articular pains :
Obesity in general causes suffering to all the joints. Some of them are particularly affected: the knees, hips, and spine.
The phenomena of osteoarthritis are much aggravated, with the premature aging of the joints and a state of disability. The herniated discs are also common, with recurrent back pain and sciatica.
Whatever the degree of obesity, physicians specialized in orthopedics or rheumatology often require their patients to lose much weight, not only to overcome their fatigue symptoms or the premature aging of a joint, but also before embarking on an operation whose results could be negative.
For example, the fitting of a knee or hip prosthesis causes strong mechanical joint solicitations, which makes the obese person concerned that the material implanted, whose lifespan is known to be limited, might get prematurely worn out.
Furthermore, acute gout, which relates to elevated uric acid in the blood (hyperuricemia), is more frequently observed here than in the normal population,
Other complications are tendonitis, and osteoporosis which is a loss of bone substance that usually occurs to women after the menopause, causing greater fragility with regard to fractures. |
