How to deal with morbid obesity? |
Psycho-nutritional follow-up:
A beneficial psychological effect of weight loss was shown when a slightly restrictive diet was associated with a cognitive-behavioral program. We wanted to assess whether this benefit would also be observed with a group of patients who showed from the beginning serious obesity and high anxiety and depression.
Method: 42 obese subjects (36 women, 6 men) were treated for 6 weeks as part of a cognitive-behavioral hospital program associated with 1,000 kcal a day, and a program of intensive physical activity. The Beck depression questionnaire and the Goldberg general health questionnaire have been proposed before and after the treatment.
Results: The average weight before the treatment is 105 kg. It drops significantly by 7.7 kg in 6 weeks, that is 6% of the initial weight.
Conclusions: these results show that the loss of weight does not entail a pejoration so much as a significant improvement in the psycho-emotional state during a 6-week cognitive-behavioral and nutritional hospital program, despite the presence of high depression levels at the beginning of the treatment. This mood improvement is already apparent with an average loss of 6% from the initial weight.
